What is Agate Pottery?
An 18th century obsession with geology led to this traditional pottery style mimicking agate stone. Different colored clays are mixed together and thrown on the wheel, creating the Agate swirls. Other types of Agate pottery utilizes pressed slabs of swirled clay into molds. In my own work, I incorporate sprigged embellishments and a slight mottled glaze to offset the swirled motion of the agate clays.
