Let's talk delft. It is every potter's "forgotten cousin," ie; we kinda know it existed a few centuries ago and wasn't it some kind of Chinese porcelain knock-off? For the curious potter, though, delftware's history and modern practice scan way beyond such sound bites.

Delftware "began" as an early 17th century offshoot of polychrome Italian maiolica in the Dutch town of Delft as the beer brewing industry declined there. Empty breweries for cheap! A blue-on-white monochrome color palette ruled for a while, meshing Calvinist "less is more" dictates with infatuation of Chinese floral designs. Soon enough superceded by polychrome Dutch "genre" painting.

Delftware has been in continuous, unbroken production up to today, with modern work more widespread and varied than ever before.

As with any style, delftware conjures certain colors, patterns and connotations. If some (only some) modern delftware looks like past efforts, well that's what style, tradition, old school, a bunch of people with shared interests, etc., means, right? But for the curious potter, delftware's 'mix and match' nature is fractals: no beginning, no end, just conversation. And the final frontier to understand delftware is symbolism and metaphor that can stand on its own as an artistic expression while allowing broader considerations anywhere, any time.
